Clear, engaging onboarding—and the ongoing education that follows—is essential to reducing barriers to adoption, empowering users, and helping them get the most from their iRobot products.

The Digital Quick Start Guide initiative is designed as a celebratory, intuitive first-touch experience. It increases confidence and familiarity while reducing the learning curve and frustration during initial setup. This work extends to the creation of a mobile and desktop-friendly Digital User Guide that ensures users have accessible, accurate support resources throughout the product lifecycle. Together, these initiatives build a more supportive, connected ecosystem around iRobot products.

My Role

As the Lead Designer for Out of Box Experience (OOBE), I craft unique unboxing experiences that guide users through unpacking and setting up their new product.

Problem Discovery

Delayed Information & Celebration in Onboarding

Users were missing crucial setup details at the right moments. Important instructions and educational screens appeared only after navigating several app steps, delaying both clarity and the initial “welcome” experience.

Limited Access to Support Materials

When users didn’t have a physical guide on hand, accessing help was challenging. The existing PDFs resulted in poor mobile readability and hindered independent troubleshooting.

Comparative Research

I conducted comprehensive reviews of industry-leading onboarding and user education strategies from companies like Levoit and Garmin. By analyzing their approaches to integrating guide content within their apps, I identified key design principles around structure, clarity, and engagement. These insights informed new solutions tailored to iRobot’s ecosystem and user needs.

Solution

Digital Quick Start Guide

I designed the concept and led the initiative to create a digital Quick Start Guide that appears immediately after QR code scanning. This experience delivers essential setup instructions alongside a welcoming, celebratory moment that reduces confusion and improves confidence from the very beginning.

Digital User Guide & Content Modernization

I drove the transition from static, print-first documentation to a dynamic, scalable digital system. This included:

Evaluating and integrating a Component Content Management System (CCMS)

Establishing cross-platform publishing workflows

Ensuring consistent, accurate content across mobile and desktop experiences

This modernization improved production efficiency, ensured content accuracy, and created a seamless, user-friendly support experience.

Key Insights & Takeaways

This effort involved close partnership with the Design Research team. Together, we meticulously identified pain points by conducting user testing on initial concepts and synthesizing data from past research studies and Customer Care interactions. This comprehensive approach allowed us to pinpoint the primary moments of difficulty during unboxing, onboarding, and when users sought assistance.

Learnings

Incorporate analytics and user behavior data to make informed design choices and measure the impact of design changes.

Stay curious and adaptable, continuously learn about new technologies, and be proactive in integrating them into the design process.
